Visual Inspection
We check for external damage, correct wiring in the plug, and appropriately rated fuses. This is the most important part of PAT testing and identifies the majority of faults including damage to plugs, cables, and appliance casings.
Electrical Testing
We conduct formal tests using industry-standard Seaward equipment to measure insulation resistance, earth continuity, and leakage current. Our machines are Code of Practice approved from the leading supplier.

PAT Testing Frequency Guide
There is no fixed legal requirement for PAT testing frequency. The interval between tests should be based on risk assessment, considering the type of equipment, environment, and how it is used.
Office Environment
IT equipment: 2-4 years. Portable appliances: 1-2 years visual, 1-4 years combined. Extension leads should be checked every 6-12 months with combined testing every 1-2 years.
Industrial Setting
Portable appliances require weekly user checks, 1-6 month formal visual inspection, and 6-12 month combined testing. Hand-held equipment needs daily/weekly checks.
Construction Sites
Both 110V and 230V equipment require daily/weekly user checks, monthly formal visual inspection, and combined testing every 3 months due to harsh conditions.
Pass/Fail Criteria
Clear pass/fail criteria ensure consistent testing standards. Equipment should fail visual inspection if there is damage to plugs, cables, or casings, incorrect fuses, signs of overheating, or exposed wiring.
Earth Continuity Test
Class I appliances must have earth resistance ≤ 0.1Ω plus cable resistance. Allow approximately 0.1Ω per metre of cable length.
Insulation Resistance Test
Class I appliances require ≥ 1.0 MΩ, Class II appliances require ≥ 2.0 MΩ. Testing is typically performed at 500V DC. For sensitive items such as IT equipment and electronics, we test at 250V to prevent damage while still ensuring safety compliance.
Actions on Failure
Failed equipment must be immediately removed from service, clearly labelled, documented in your register, and either repaired by a competent person or safely disposed of.
PAT Testing Record Keeping
Maintaining accurate records demonstrates compliance, tracks equipment condition, and enables planning of future testing schedules.
Required Information
Record Asset ID, description, location, equipment class, test date, tester name, visual result, earth continuity, insulation resistance, overall result, and next test due date.
Custom Labelling
We use our own professional custom labels for all tested appliances. Pass labels show test date, tester ID, next test due, and appliance ID. Failed equipment is clearly marked with "DO NOT USE" warnings.
Record Retention
Best practice recommends keeping records for the life of equipment plus a reasonable period. Many organisations retain records for 5-7 years minimum.
